A pair of French academic male figure studies, executed in graphite and charcoal. Both have a distinctly stylised quality, with simplified forms, exaggerated contours and strong tonal modelling.
The lower study depicts the Artemision Bronze, the celebrated ancient Greek sculpture of c. 460 BC, generally identified as Zeus or Poseidon. The upper work continues the classical theme with an expressive study of the male torso.
